The CDC/ATSDR Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) measures the relative social vulnerability of U.S. communities to disasters and public-health emergencies at the census-tract and county level. It combines 16 U.S. Census variables, grouped into four themes (socioeconomic status, household characteristics, racial and ethnic minority status, and housing type and transportation), into ranked vulnerability scores. Maintained by the CDC and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) through their Geospatial Research, Analysis, and Services Program (GRASP), the SVI helps public-health officials and emergency planners prepare for and respond to hazardous events. It serves as an upstream source for the KnowWhereGraph.

The CDC/ATSDR Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) ranks the relative social vulnerability of U.S. communities to external stresses on human health, such as natural disasters and disease outbreaks. It draws on 16 U.S. Census variables organized into four themes — socioeconomic status, household characteristics, racial and ethnic minority status, and housing type and transportation — and summarizes them into vulnerability scores at the census-tract and county level.
The index is maintained by the CDC and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) through their Geospatial Research, Analysis, and Services Program (GRASP).
The SVI serves as an upstream source for the KnowWhereGraph.
The SVI is produced by CDC/ATSDR, U.S. federal agencies; its data are generally in the U.S. public domain. Please attribute the CDC/ATSDR Geospatial Research, Analysis, and Services Program (GRASP) when using the index.
