The Microbial Conditions Ontology (MCO) standardizes the description of microbial growth conditions so that experiments can be annotated in a consistent, machine-readable way across repositories and publications. It extends existing OBO Foundry terminology with terms for medium composition, environmental parameters, genetic background, and other factors needed to describe how a microbial assay or culture was performed.
The project was developed to support structured annotation of microbial experiments, including use in RegulonDB and related microbial data resources. Its GitHub repository serves as the main project home for ontology releases, issue tracking, and the editable source used to build the published OBO and OWL artifacts.
