MSKCC About Herbs

About Herbs is maintained by the Integrative Medicine Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) to help patients and healthcare professionals weigh the value and risks of common herbs and other dietary supplements. It has been online since at least 2002, originally at aboutherbs.com, which now redirects to the MSK site.

Content

The database holds about 300 monographs on herbs, botanicals, dietary supplements, and other products. Each monograph has two parts. The patient and caregiver part explains what the product is, its potential uses and benefits, and its side effects. The healthcare professional part gives the scientific name, a clinical summary, food sources, purported uses and benefits, mechanism of action, contraindications, adverse reactions, herb-drug interactions, herb-lab interactions, and literature references. Each monograph shows its last update date; a pharmacist and botanicals expert updates the content continually with other MSK Integrative Medicine Service experts.

Access and terms

Monographs can be read on the MSK website or in the About Herbs app for iOS and Android. There is no bulk download or API. The content is copyrighted by MSK with all rights reserved, and each monograph carries a disclaimer that it is general health information, not a substitute for medical advice.
