N2T (Name-to-Thing) is a resolver for persistent and compact identifiers run by the California Digital Library. Given an identifier of the form scheme:prefix/value, such as an ARK, DOI or biomedical compact identifier (CURIE), it matches the scheme to a registered definition and redirects to the target resolver. N2T shares a common compact identifier prefix space with identifiers.org under an agreement between CDL and EMBL-EBI. The service was re-platformed as a lighter scheme resolver (version 0.12.5 when checked on 2026-10-05); the legacy N2T service is deprecated, ARK resolution now forwards to arks.org, and the ARK NAAN and shoulder registries moved to GitHub Pages. As of 2026-10-05 it listed 1,776 registered schemes.

N2T (Name-to-Thing) is a persistent identifier resolver run by the California Digital Library. It works like a URL shortener for persistent identifiers: a request such as https://n2t.net/pdb:2gc4 is matched to a registered scheme or prefix and redirected to the resolver for that scheme.
N2T resolves ARKs, DOIs and other identifier schemes, and compact identifiers (CURIEs) for biomedical data. Its compact identifier prefixes are shared with identifiers.org, as described in Wimalaratne et al. 2018.
The legacy N2T service is deprecated. The current resolver is a smaller Python application (https://github.com/CDLUC3/N2T, MIT License). ARK resolution forwards to arks.org, and the ARK NAAN and shoulder registries are published at https://cdluc3.github.io/naan_reg_priv/. The full legacy prefix list is still served but was last modified in July 2025.
The scheme list is available as JSON from https://n2t.net/.info?valid=1, and an OpenAPI description of the resolver is at https://n2t.net/api.
